State of Mississippi Employees To Be Fired

The Clarion Ledger reported this morning that Senate Bill 2380 was approved with a vote of 29-19 and would allow Employees to be fired much easier than they have been in the past. Both the Governor and Lt. Governor approve of the measure as a way of agencies to "trim" down.

The State system does offer employees protection from the "at will" type of firings that can happen in the private sector but it doesn't provide immunity.  To be fair there are 2 types of State employees, those in State Service and those referred to as Non-State Service.  The Non State service employees can be terminated at any time for any reason and are not protected by the personnel board and are usually mid to upper level management/professional jobs in the government.  The trade off for these non state service employees is that they earn usually 25% more than a State Service employee in the similar position.

Now the powers of today's election cycle want to give agencies more flexibility in the firing of state service employees. In a perfect world this is  great solution to fixing a broken agency or part of an agency but in most agencies it will be used as a tool for retribution or a gift to a friend.
